THE ONE ROOM HOTEL Release – Autumn 2010

Experiential; sensory and seductive: the definition of a hotel is being re-aligned

JAMESPLUMB, the design duo who salvage forgotten treasures and re-invent them as contemporary, elegant design, invite a chosen few into a truly inimitable hotel.

Hosted by Hostem, a new East London menswear bastion located on Redchurch St, Shoreditch, the initiative will bring it’s panache for the original by hosting a travel experience like no other. Created for the London Design Festival by JAMESPLUMB, who designed the store’s interior, the event will allow a select few the chance to spend one night in a truly unique and intimate installation – THE ONE ROOM HOTEL. By day, the space acts as an exhibition for the interior designer’s striking innovation and time-worn, lovingly restored pieces, all of them new and debuted for the first time. By night, anyone can gain a chance to spend the evening in this captivating enclave as the keys are handed over and the hum of Redchurch Street melts away. A stand alone suite with a separate entrance from the store, the space comes equipped with a considered library and a selection from JAMESPLUMB’s own film archive. Their latest bespoke designs will all be available to buy.

The project is the natural evolution for JAMESPLUMB, headed by two artists under one name, James Russell and Hannah Plumb. For their debut showcase in 2009, the design duo presented a transient interpretation of their home interior in a campaign tent at Tent London. They extended this to an installation which culminated in their first international exhibition ‘From This Day Forward’ curated by Diana Marrone for the Fuorisalone during Milan Design Week 2010. Of their new venture, they say: “We wanted to take our installations a step further and allow others to inhabit them rather than just pass through, to have the experience for themselves.” The public are invited to make their case for a nights stay via the HOSTEM or JAMESPLUMB websites.

No detail is left unattended with beautiful bed linen supplied by Matteo, and a range of superlative products for skin, hair and body provided by Aesop. If guests wish to venture outside they can enjoy a complimentary cocktail with canapés at Le Trois Garcons’ beautifully eccentric sister bar, Lounge Lover.

A rapidly rising profile has seen the pair recently celebrated in lifestyle titles ‘World of Interiors’ and the Financial Times supplement, ‘How To Spend It’. The overlooked, discarded and time-worn have a new found confidence and identity under their hand, with their luminaires, assemblage and interior features straddling the space between design and art. In combining, restoring and finding new habitats for the unwanted they celebrate and reveal stories that might have gone untold and in their new function find new tales. Their talent for unearthing hidden gems, dis-used flotsam that they transform into elegant, timeless design has garnered a cult following, not least from Hostem’s owner James Brown, who enlisted the duo to create Hostem’s quietly assured, sophisticated space to house their alchemic mix of street luxe and the avant garde complete with a ‘revolving space’ to showcase new and progressive brands.

Infusing the standard hotel stay with art and cutting edge, inspirational design, THE ONE ROOM HOTEL elevates the concept into an experience, a beautiful incident, a truly cherished memory.
